Synopsis

Three stories that are part of the same story. In 1941, in a provincial town in Argentina, a girl confesses to a priest the first and diffuse sexual impulses she notices in her body, related to the attraction she feels for a young man named Videla who passes under her window every day. In 1977 a group of young revolutionaries prepares an attack on an airfield to liquidate a Videla who is no longer young and is known to all. And finally, an old woman -the girl in the first story- plays a game of cards with her grandson, who has come to visit her at the residence where she spends her days, and between moves tells him what happened to her son, the boy’s father, in what turns out to be a new confession.

Synopsis

When clean drinking water is nearly exhausted, FINLEY, a census officer, 40s, takes his bride, EMILY 30s, and her 9-year old son, EWAN, on a working vacation to the once-grand tropical escape – Bedroom City. It will be a chance to fish, relax and – Emily hopes – for Ewan to grow close to the man he hates for replacing the father who abandoned him.

Instead, they find a decaying, desolate port town dominated by an immense water tower and a cluster of cooperative apartment buildings. There, Finley embarks on the task of updating the local census. But as Emily soon finds out, Finley is using the census as a cover. After receiving a mysterious letter from an anonymous resident of Bedroom City, Finley has come on a quest – to track down his biological parents.

The whole place is run by KEITH LANGSTON, 60s, the kindly but all-powerful Administrator, who provides room, board and, most importantly, clean drinking water, in exchange for the inhabitants’ labor. It doesn’t take long for Finley to sense that the locals are holding something back, hiding something they are afraid of – something that now threatens his own family, as his wife is slowly consumed by a strange illness.

As Finley probes deeper, he is resented and rejected by the bizarre community, where messages for the dead are recorded at the city’s unusually busy funeral parlour, where a siren announces the twice daily release of water into the city’s labyrinth of pipes, where the Administrator’s announcements are broadcast everywhere on loudspeakers, where a telegraph is the only connection to the outside world. To make matters worse, Ewan grows ever-more resentful of Finley with each passing day. But when Emily’s deteriorating health forces her onto a boat back to the mainland, Ewan does an about-face and decides to stay with Finley – the only father he has.

It is only with the help of the town’s UNDERTAKER and TILDA, a cook, that Finley learns who his parents were, why they abandoned him, and why there are over 7,000 unaccounted-for deaths. When it dawns on him that no boat and no message ever leave, he has to face Bedroom City’s dark secret. But by then, he too is stricken by the same mysterious illness that afflicted Emily and is powerless to stop the killing. If he and the rest of Bedroom City’s terrified residents are to survive, it will be up to Ewan.

Synopsis

While he and his brothers are building the plane they will patent with the family name to mark the anniversary of their father’s death, a film director uses the excuse of documenting the process to conduct a series of interviews with his family. In the interviews, he confronts the issues the family have never spoken of: who was the person that left their home when he was only three years old?

Synopsis

2008, Culver City, California. The banner tow pilot and single father GREG CAMP listens as the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) eye specialist informs him that he has a degenerative retinal disease, a condition that will lead to total blindness if he doesn’t follow the strict diet he is prescribed. He is also informed that his pilot’s license is being suspended, at least until he undergoes a much-needed operation.

As his condition worsens and he struggles to make ends meet, Greg risks losing the only means to provide for his two kids, who live with him in a motorhome provided by the Gardenia Valley Airfield. His condition breaks the family’s morale, damaging his relationship with his son Chris (15), who openly defies him by washing cars in a nearby lot to bring in extra cash. To his younger son Digger (8), Greg is still a hero, but Chris resents this, knowing that his admiration is based on nothing but a mixture of lies and past glories, like the Cuban Eight, the signature upside-down maneuver that made his name back in the day.

RANDY BABBITT, an inspector from the FAA, drives to the airfield to investigate an unanswered question in Greg’s case: Did he break the law by using his private pilot’s license for commercial purposes? Towing banners without a proper license is an ethical violation that could result in a trial and a strict penalty. After the surgery Greg, his eyesight still blurry, goes to the FAA and fills in an application to get his license back, but he accidentally applies for a co-pilot position at Southwest Airline. Broke but determined, he sees this as an opportunity to get back in the game and even to get his aircraft back. However, unable to perform as a pilot, he is replaced and asked to move out of the motorhome with his kids.

A ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ statement convinces FAA chief inspector Willy to give Greg a break. He tells him that to get the co-pilot position he’ll need to buy a couple of expensive manuals and do an unpaid training period. Willy also gives him an ultimatum: if he doesn’t get his license before the training period ends, the opportunity to work with the company will be handed to someone else.

The day of the FAA co-pilot final exam arrives. When their turn comes to discuss Greg’s progress, most inspectors are not convinced, but Ben Wilfer steps in: ‘We believe in our people and America is still the land of equality and opportunity. Sure, he can’t see well, but he has the experience and, most importantly, the instinct of an expert pilot. He’s passed each and every test with flying colors. He’s been landing planes by listening to the propellers alone; if that’s not talent, I don’t know what is.’ Ben Wilfer finally manages to convince them, and Greg gets the job.

Greg opens the door to the family service community room. The kids and staff all turn to see him dressed in a suit, wearing a pilot’s cap with a shiny logo that reads: ‘Southwest Airlines’. Digger smiles and runs over to him. His hero is back.

Synopsis

The year is 1969. Man’s first steps on the moon.
Navarro Ismael Ferrase, a man followed by a 127-metre-long shadow, a professional con artist and hatter by trade, waits for his wife Cándida to wake up from her coma; a coma she fell into after a row between the two of them caused them to crash their car.
As he waits for her, Navarro travels from city to city, trying to reinvent himself. He hopes to evolve, to change, to transform, so that when the day finally arrives, and Candida wakes up, he will have become the man she wanted him to be. This is his last chance to save their marriage.
But Navarro has a lot on his plate. His daughter has been kidnapped by an army of relentless paramilitaries whose mission is none other than to destroy him. Meanwhile, CCTV, the state TV network of communist China, plans to broadcast Navarro confessing to all his scams and fraudulent deeds live on air.

Synopsis

Nine Letter is a miniseries of 12 episodes, one hour each.
It is an anthology that takes in a hundred years of the Hollywood Sign’s history and the events surrounding each of its 9 letters.
It is a historical drama based on real characters and events.
In two years’ time, on 8 December 2023, the Hollywood Sign will celebrate its 100th birthday, an occasion sure to be marked with much fanfare.

In 1978, to mark the 75th anniversary of Hollywood’s incorporation as a city, the original sign was replaced by a new one. The unveiling, for which the sign was surrounded by a mass of searchlights  flooding the sky above with beams of light, brought in a television audience of 60 million in the United States alone.

In short, ours is no ordinary protagonist. This is the story of 9 letters in sheet metal that form a sign 13 meters high, 106 meters long – 9 letters that spell out ‘Hollywood’.
A meditation on adaptation and reinvention.

The copyright for the Hollywood Sign, or more specifically the ‘Hollywood Stylized Mark’, belongs to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
NINE LETTERS has obtained permission for worldwide use of the Mark in this TV series from Global Icons.

Synopsis
